Serena Buonaguidi-Haynes
Visual Artist
Whakatū Nelson
Serena’s paintings have a mythical aesthetic, often being perceived as whimsical, ethereal and dream-like. Serena’s muse of painting the likes of birds, deer and swimmers all evolved from her personal move from the busy city to the wonderful lifestyle of being surrounded by nature and the calming ocean in Nelson.
Serena has a unique approach to achieving her painting technique - the canvases are laid flat on the floor, using bold brushstrokes for the backgrounds, finger painting for the figures and the finer details are achieved through wire scratching and pencil drawings.
Originally from the UK, part Danish, part Italian, Serena has successfully established a loyal clientele both internationally and within New Zealand.

Serena’s paintings evoke a sense of quiet wonder - works that feel both mythical and dreamlike. Birds, deer, and swimmers often appear in her compositions, inspired by her move from the intensity of city life to the gentle rhythm of nature and ocean living in Nelson.
Her process is as intuitive as it is distinctive. Serena paints with her canvases laid flat, building bold, expressive backgrounds with sweeping brushstrokes. Figures emerge through finger painting, while wire scratching and pencil markings add delicate layers of texture and detail.
Originally from the UK, with Danish and Italian heritage, Serena has cultivated a devoted following both in New Zealand and internationally.
