Cass Bay
Original Painting by Ele Stevenson
Mixed media: paint, collage, paper, and layers of resin
Dimension: 400mm round
The Paddle Boarding Series
These three pieces were inspired by my ‘happy place’ - out on our boards with my girls, floating, laughing, and generally mucking around. Sometimes when we push off from Cass Bay, we paddle all the way out to Ripapa Island, or, if the winds and tide aren’t so favourable, we stay closer around Lyttelton Harbour or maybe even head towards Quail Island.
We always look like we’re going away for a week with all our safety gear, but hidden in a small flask there might be a little dram to warm us up when we get back to shore. We’re especially buoyed when we spot Hector’s dolphins diving under our boards - their playful presence brings such joy that we’ve been known to lose our balance in the excitement!
At night in Akaroa, if you’re out on your board in the harbour with fluorescent lights, you can see the amazing sea life glowing beneath you.
I hope you enjoy these pieces.
Each one has taken over 15 hours to make. They are mixed media works - paint, collage, and paper - with layers of resin between each addition to create a sense of depth. As always with resin, please keep out of direct sunlight.
