Taiao means nature or environment. The word nature is a transcendental signifier ie: one word doesn’t quite capture the vastness of the concept.
I have been looking at Gerard Richter's gorgeous landscapes and these inspired this work. The moodiness and the simplicity of mark making encapsulating the land form in an abstracted way.

Inspired by a Falling rocks sign spotted in Arthur’s pass.
Falling is such an interesting word and I think it relates to our current care of the environment. We are all falling below the standard of care required. The texture in the painting is building material, hessian and cardboard and the arrangement is reminiscent of the underpass that was remodelled to accommodate a waterfall in Otira gorge.

Pays homage to Colin McCahon’s Tomorrow Will Be the Same But Not as This Is - a title Nic noted has perplexed him for many years because it “does not make sense.” This questioning and searching for meaning becomes part of the work itself.
It’s a cautionary phrase about our environment. The use of Reo is important. It’s our other national language and Tangata Whenua want this taonga to be thriving. The use of text in works is common, think McCahon, Hotere, Frizzell, Peter Robinson.
