Sirra Ceramics is the work of Janina Hodges, who works in ceramics with an approach shaped by intuition, texture and movement. Coming from two generations of New Zealand artists, she was drawn to clay as a way to carve out a creative practice of her own, working on the same wheel once used by her father.
Trained originally in textile design, Janina brings a strong sense of pattern and surface to her ceramic work. She treats glaze and underglaze much like paint, using colour, movement and texture to build depth across each piece. Natural, flowing glazes are central to her practice, each piece carrying its own individual character from the firing process.
Working primarily in vessel forms, Janina creates small collections and one-off statement pieces, each shaped as much by process and material as by intention. Pieces made to be admired and lived with, bringing something distinctive and tactile into the home.
