Marc Zuckerman is the designer and maker behind MZ Design, creating beautifully considered wooden pieces inspired by the strength, character and natural beauty of Aotearoa’s native trees.
Marc’s connection to the West Coast began in 1971, when he arrived in Hokitika as an exploration geologist. Captivated by the rugged landscape and peacefulness of the region, he and his family eventually settled on three acres east of Hokitika, where they built their home - including the windows, doors and cabinetry themselves. It was through building that home that Marc discovered a deep love for woodworking and design. Over more than four decades, his self-taught practice has evolved from furniture into a collection of beautifully designed kitchen and homewares, with a focus on simplicity, functionality and enduring form.
His work reflects a minimalist modern aesthetic with a Pacific influence, allowing the natural character of the timber to take centre stage. Every piece is individually made in New Zealand using 100% sustainably managed New Zealand timbers, celebrating the warmth, grain and unique qualities of each material. Working with traditional woodworking machinery and without computer-aided production, Marc continues to take a hands-on approach to design and making. With the support of a small team of skilled woodworkers, he creates pieces that are practical, beautifully made and designed to be enjoyed every day.

It is present in mature native forests of both North and South Islands forming the tall tree canopy 20-35m high. It is generally 1-1.5m in diameter at its base and recognised by its weeping foliage. Rimu heartwood is one of the world’s most beautifully grained timbers.

Kauri Agathis australis
Kauri is the most famous of NZ timbers. It has the largest diameter of any native tree, ranging from 3-4.5m. Dense Kauri forest once covered large areas of Northland and the Coromandel. What is left of the old growth Kauri forests is now protected. It’s heartwood ranges in colour from light yellow to red brown. Quarter sawn Kauri has a characteristic fleck in the grain. The Kauri used in these items is from logs recovered from swamps buried 8-10,000 years ago.
