Peter Latham is a New Zealand landscape photographer whose work captures the scale, drama, and ever-changing moods of Aotearoa’s natural environment. Surrounded by vast oceans and shaped by rapidly shifting weather, New Zealand offers both inspiration and challenge—conditions Peter embraces with persistence, patience, and a deep respect for light. For him, being in the right place at the right time is everything, and when nature doesn’t cooperate, he returns again and again until the moment reveals itself.
Peter’s photographic journey began in the late 1980s, driven by a dream to document the landscape. Early road trips through the South Island, countless rolls of film, and even a six-month cycling tour around New Zealand cemented his dedication to the medium. His career later took him across the world as a cruise ship photographer, allowing him to photograph many of the planet’s most remarkable destinations. A formative encounter with the work of American landscape photographer Christopher Burkett proved pivotal, shaping Peter’s approach to capturing light, detail, and atmosphere.
Returning home to New Zealand in 2003, Peter established his practice as a fine art photographer, experimenting with large-scale printing on canvas and building strong relationships with galleries. His iconic landscape images have since become highly sought after, held in private and corporate collections around the world, including the family of Swedish camera manufacturer Hasselblad.
Peter’s work has been commissioned for major public and corporate projects, most notably 21 large-scale landscape murals at Auckland International Airport, showcasing New Zealand’s natural beauty to millions of travellers each year. He continues to push the boundaries of photographic detail using medium-format equipment, capturing images of extraordinary depth and clarity. Driven by curiosity and a love of remote places, Peter Latham remains committed to exploring and documenting the landscapes that define Aotearoa.

I was camping above this beach in Abel Tasman National Park & had already settled into my sleeping bag, when the full moon’s luminance became so intense that it lit my tent like daylight! Moments later I was racing down the beach with my equipment to this remarkable rock stack. As the night deepened, the stars revealed their full brilliance, with the twin beacons Alpha Centauri & Beta Centauri (The Pointers) shining brightly in the night sky. Recording 20 second exposures over multiple images, I stitched four frames together across the horizon to retain maximum detail & clarity.
This print pays homage to Aotearoa’s Māori & European explorers who navigated vast oceans to reach these shores, guided only by the stars & their unwavering resolve. This sculpted sentinel stands with a spiritual presence, watching over this bay since the beginning of time. Harnessing nature’s elements culminated in this unique image, one that feels both ancient & enduring.
